Worn spark plugs can lead to sluggish acceleration, poor fuel economy, and trouble starting your engine. The good news? With a few basic tools and a little patience, you can replace them yourself and have your truck running like new.

Can You Replace Spark Plugs Yourself?

Replacing Spark Plugs in Your Toyota Tacoma

1. Disconnect the Battery

Start by unplugging the negative battery terminal to prevent any electrical mishaps. Safety always comes first when working under the hood.

2. Remove the Engine Cover

Lift off the plastic engine cover to access the ignition coils. Some Tacoma models may require you to unbolt it first.

3. Remove Ignition Coils and Old Plugs

Unplug the ignition coil connectors and unbolt the coils. Use a spark plug socket and extension to carefully remove each old plug.

4. Install New Spark Plugs

Thread each new spark plug by hand to avoid cross-threading. Then tighten with a torque wrench to your Tacoma's recommended spec.

5. Reassemble and Test

Reinstall the ignition coils and engine cover. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and listen for smooth idle and response.

Other Parts to Check While You're There

While you're under the hood of your truck, it's a great time to inspect your exhaust parts for signs of wear. A failing exhaust system can also reduce power and efficiency.
