OEM Toyota Starters

2016 Scion FR-S

Change vehicle

When you turn the ignition, the starter motor kicks in and begins the combustion process. Without a functioning starter, your Toyota RAV4 won't get far—even if the battery and fuel system are in perfect shape.

Knowing Your Toyota's Starter

Main Parts of a Car Starter

Starter Motor

This electric motor does the heavy lifting by cranking the engine when you turn the key. It draws energy directly from the battery to rotate the engine's flywheel and get the pistons moving.

Solenoid

The solenoid acts like a smart switch. When you engage the ignition, it sends electrical current to the starter motor and pushes the gear out to engage the flywheel.

Drive Gear (or Pinion Gear)

This gear temporarily connects the starter to the engine’s flywheel. It rotates the engine just enough to start the combustion cycle before retracting to prevent damage.

Brushes and Armature

Inside the starter motor, the brushes and armature generate the rotation needed to spin the drive gear. Worn brushes can lead to slow or failed starts.

When to Check Other Parts

If you’re replacing the starter on your Toyota RAV4, it’s a smart move to inspect related components like the alternator. A weak alternator can mimic starter failure by not charging the battery properly, leading to starting issues down the line.
